Governance at CNRI — Vision, Leadership & Professional Excellence

CNRI is committed to the highest standards of governance, transparency and institutional excellence. Our governance model deliberately separates strategic governance from executive management, so the organisation stays accountable, responsive and effective while serving member organisations and rural communities across India.

How CNRI Is Governed

At the heart of our philosophy is a simple belief: sustainable institutions are built on integrity, collective leadership, participation and measurable impact. Strategic decisions are taken through a participatory process; professional execution is entrusted to a dedicated executive team. The structure has clear tiers:

Tier Role
Chief Patron & Patron Provide moral guidance, institutional support and strategic inspiration; not involved in day-to-day administration.
Governing Leadership Chairman, President, Co-Chairman, Executive Chairman, Executive Co-Chairman and National Vice President define vision, approve policy and provide oversight.
Advisory Council & Research Committee Independent expert advice and evidence-based research that strengthen decision-making.
Secretary General (CEO) Principal executive authority; heads the National Secretariat and translates policy into action.
National Executive Council (NEC) Apex policy-making and governing body of the Confederation.
National Secretariat Administrative and operational backbone under the Secretary General.
State & District Chapters Federated implementation network across India.
Strategic Leadership and Executive Management

The Governing Leadership sets vision, approves policies and monitors institutional performance. Two specialised bodies support it: the Chairman’s Advisory Council (eminent professionals, policymakers and development experts) and the Chairman’s Research Committee (the organisation’s knowledge and policy platform). Executive leadership rests with the Secretary General, who serves as Chief Executive Officer and represents CNRI before governments, international institutions and development partners.

A Federal, Three-Tier Structure

CNRI operates through a decentralised yet integrated network of State Chapters, District Chapters and Member Organisations. This federal structure ensures national policies translate into meaningful local action while preserving regional diversity and community participation. Thematic strength is added through National Committees, Programme Cells and Women and Youth Chapters.

Principles of Good Governance
  • Transparency and accountability in every programme and partnership.
  • Ethical, collective leadership and clear separation of governance from management.
  • Evidence-based, participatory decision-making.
  • Inclusiveness, professionalism and continuous institutional learning.
